The theme of All India Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association’s Summit is Multi Pathways for Mitigation of Carbon Footprints. India is emitting about 2.9 GT CO2 emissions with 1.8 tonnes CO2 per capita emissions and is the third largest polluter (about 4.9% of the total global emissions).
National Steel Policy 2017 envisages steel production of 255 million tonnes by 2030-31 against the current production of 127 Million Tonnes (an increase of 128 Million Tonnes). This calls for immediate actions to reduce our CO2 emissions from the current level of 2.5 tonnes CO2/tonne of steel to the global average of 1.7 tonnes CO2/tonne of steel.
Indian steel industry and economy are growing very fast. This calls careful planning and executing its emissions goals. This Summit will focus on the various Pathways not only to achieve of our targeted emissions goals but also to follow the emerging trends of the global steel industry.
India took its first significant step towards economic liberalization in 1991. At that time, the country’s economy was undergoing a radical transformation. In response to this changing landscape, the Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association (SIMA) was established and began its operations on 11 February 1992. SIMA’s primary objective is to serve as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and growth-related insights within the industry.
One of SIMA’s key roles is to provide a forum for reviewing the industry’s smooth functioning in relation to government policies, global developments, and market feasibilities. As an apex body, SIMA also acts as an interface with the government, advocating for and safeguarding the ever-growing needs of the industry in a rapidly evolving business environment.
Furthermore, SIMA is committed to maintaining an up-to-date database from both national and global perspectives. This ensures that its members are well- informed about growth possibilities and future prospects, enabling them to make informed decisions.
In summary, SIMA plays a crucial role in facilitating the growth and development of the sponge iron manufacturing industry in India. By fostering knowledge exchange, advocating for industry needs, and providing valuable insights, SIMA contributes to the industry’s success in an increasingly competitive global market.
